Market Growth Factors
The Vietnamese government envisions 5G enabling national digital transformation and developing socioeconomic status. The government made a priority of spreading 5G nationwide to all provinces, industrial parks, research and development centers and major transport hubs by 2030 in the Digital Infrastructure Strategy to 2025 with a Vision to 2030. This is USD 500 million for telecommunications infrastructure upgrades and 15% subsidies for equipment, with companies operating over 20,000 base stations. Prime Minister's Directive 05 makes 5G commercialization a foundation of national economic development, along with expanding broadband across the country. They also plan to strongly establish a 5G ecosystem, and contribute up to 30% of the digital economy to GDP by 2030.
However, the three biggest telecommunications carriers are aggressively pushing on with 5G infrastructure development. Viettel, the first carrier for commercially launching 5G, has a plan. The plan is to build 20,000 new 5G base stations by 2025 in all provinces and major cities. Industrial parks, airports, seaports, hospitals and schools are priorities. National operators, VNPT and MobiFone, have made nationwide deployments & coverage down to the commune level possible in a context of lower price of hardware components and successful spectrum auctions, encouraging the deployment of services in more areas and forming the basis of Vietnam's digital transformation & high-speed communication network.
Vietnam's 5G with AI, cloud, IoT and edge computing allows for modern applications across sectors. In late 2024, Viettel and Qualcomm enacted the first commercial Open RAN 5G network within Vietnam, which enabled flexible, virtual, energy-efficient deployments and integrated multiple vendors and technologies. Viettel partnered with South Korea's KT Corp with USD 95 million to set up AI Data Centers and a GPU Farm. MobiFone offers 5G and AI integrated B2B solutions with over 100 digital services for health care, energy, education and smart cities. Combined, they allow for low-latency, real-time data processing and autonomous decisions, important to a digitally competitive economy.
